HOW TO LEARN TO DRAW – A GUIDEBOOK

Lesson 1 - Simple shapes

0 – Purpose. Students must have a purpose for what are they drawing. Just wanting to learn to draw won’t work! But wanting to learn to draw a realistic portrait with a marker is the right goal.
Everything we see can be assembled from simple shapes.
Practice drawing figures on interesting photo examples (references)

0 – introduction
Whole session we practicing shaping differents things – animals/ hard elements
Home-work practice figures on references

Skills: Understanding dimensional relationships, the “sighting” method
One of the techniques for constructing proportions = Viewing
Basics of measuring objects and their relationships

Skills: Working with light shading, creating the illusion of volume.
Light sources, types of shadows (own, falling shadows), tone scale.
Volume is the same figures (circle, square…) but with tone and shadow. Parsing tone and shadow on the example of a BALL. Practicing tone and shadow on the basis of Shapes (circle, triangle, square).
whole session practicing make shadows on basics figures

Skills: Building basic perspectives
Linear perspective with 1, 2, 3 vanishing points. Horizon line, vanishing points, dimensional distortion.
Drawing a room, a road, a city in different perspectives.

Skills: Conveying depth through blur, more complex types of perspective
4 and 5 point perspective and aerial perspective
Briefly on complex cases (4-5 points) and aerial perspective (blurring objects at a distance).
“Find the vanishing point” is a game where you have to identify the vanishing point in an image.

Skills – learn to understand the basic principles of postures and positions
Drawing people/animals in different poses (running, jumping).

Purpose: To learn how to build a harmonious drawing by correctly accentuating and balancing elements.
Basic rules of composition: rule of thirds, balance, focus, distribution of elements.
Exercises to create compositional schemes based on reference images.

Skills: Working with a limited palette
Color without paint: the power of hues
The concept of color and shades: how one color can give different tones through layering.
Principles of creating depth and volume by working with one color.
Experiment with layering pencil tone to create a variety of shades and volumes.

Skill – how to create your own characters
Use previous figure creation experience to create your own characters

Objective: To put all the knowledge gained into practice by creating a complete drawing based on your own idea. Choosing a theme or goal: “What do I want to draw?”
PRACTISE TOGETHER – create a simple scene with all technic we learned
Sketch from simple shapes.

Adjustment of proportions.
Adding volume with the help of light shading.
Applying perspective and building a composition.
Final detailing.
